How to Make an Animated Discord PFP (Profile Picture) for Free

An animated Discord PFP (profile picture) is a short looping GIF instead of a still image, so your avatar moves a little whenever someone sees it. You can draw and export one for free in Doodraw. The one thing to know before you start: Discord only animates a profile picture for Nitro subscribers; without Nitro, the upload works but only the first frame shows.

Check this first: does your account need Nitro?

Per Discord’s own Custom Profiles help article, “Nitro subscribers can upload animated GIFs as their profile avatar,” and the supported file types for an avatar are PNG and GIF. If you are not on Nitro, you can still upload a GIF, Discord just displays it as a still, so there is no point animating your avatar until Nitro is active (per-server avatars are also Nitro-only).

If you want an animated character that works for everyone regardless of Nitro, draw it as a PNGtuber avatar for a stream, or an animated sticker or emote in a server you manage instead, covered in our guides to PNGtuber avatars and animated Discord emotes and stickers. Both of those animate for anyone watching.

Drawing it in Doodraw

  1. Open a square canvas and pick an animated brush. A face, a mascot or a simple character works best, since the avatar displays small (around 40 pixels in chat) and gets cropped into a circle everywhere.
  2. Keep the subject centered, with some padding around the edges. Discord’s circular crop hides whatever sits in the corners of a square image, so do not put important details there.
  3. Draw with bold, simple shapes. Fine detail disappears at avatar size. One or two animated elements, like wiggling eyes or a bouncing outline, read better than a busy drawing.
  4. Keep the first frame readable on its own. It is what shows if the viewer has no Nitro, or if Discord falls back to a still image anywhere.

Exporting the right way

  1. Open the export panel and choose GIF. (Discord’s avatar upload does not accept Animated PNG, so skip that option here even though it is usually the cleaner format.)
  2. Set a short Duration: 2 to 4 seconds is enough for an avatar that most people will only glance at.
  3. Transparent background is optional. Discord crops every avatar to a circle regardless of what is in the square’s corners, so a solid background works fine; turn transparency on only if you want the viewer’s own theme color to show through the circle.
  4. Export. Free exports carry a small watermark in the corner; Doodraw Pro removes it.

Getting the size right

Discord accepts a minimum of 128x128 pixels for an avatar, but most size guides recommend uploading at 512x512 so it stays sharp on high-DPI screens, since Discord stores the avatar larger than the small circle it displays in chat. Doodraw’s export is sized so the longest side is at most 1920 pixels, which is far above what Discord needs: resize the exported GIF down to roughly 512x512 (square) before uploading, using any free image resizer, so the file stays small and square.

Uploading it to Discord

Per the same Custom Profiles article:

  1. Open User Settings → Profiles on desktop, or tap your avatar then Edit Profile on mobile.
  2. Tap Change Avatar.
  3. Upload your resized GIF (If you are a Nitro subscriber, Discord lets you pick a GIF directly; without Nitro, the upload still works but shows as a still).
  4. Crop if needed, tap Apply, then Save Changes.

FAQ

Can I use an animated GIF as my Discord profile picture?

Yes, but only with Discord Nitro. Discord’s own Custom Profiles help article says Nitro subscribers can upload animated GIFs as their avatar, with supported file types PNG and GIF. Without Nitro, Discord stores the file but shows only its first frame.

What app can I use to draw an animated Discord PFP for free?

Doodraw. Drawing, animating and exporting are free: draw your character, turn on the Transparent background toggle, set a short Duration, and export as GIF. Free exports carry a small watermark; Doodraw Pro removes it.

What size should a Discord profile picture be?

Discord accepts a minimum of 128x128 pixels and crops every avatar to a circle. Most size guides recommend uploading at 512x512 pixels for a sharp result on high-DPI screens, since Discord stores the image larger than it displays it.

Do I need a transparent background for a Discord PFP?

No, it is optional. Discord crops avatars to a circle regardless of what is in the corners of your square image, so a solid background works fine. A transparent background only matters if you want the circle’s background color, set by whichever theme the viewer uses, to show through.

Can I make an animated Discord PFP without Nitro?

You can draw and export one in Doodraw for free. Whether it animates once uploaded depends on Discord: free accounts can upload the GIF, but per Discord’s Custom Profiles article, it will display as a still image until you have Nitro.
